Additional Residential Solar Power Information

You can use home solar panels as a partial or full source of electrical energy for your home. These residential solar panels can be tied into the electric grid, or you can produce all energy you need and live “off the grid”. Solar systems that are tied into the grid can even sell unused electricity back to a power company.

Photovoltaic panels absorb the energy from sunlight and convert the energy to electricity. The light excites electrons in the panel and these electrons are collected by wires embedded in the panel. As electric current is produced, it is sent through your home’s electrical system to provide power.

The majority of home solar energy systems use panels that attach to the roof of your home. The size and number of panels installed determine the amount of power or wattage the system will generate. To operate your home completely with solar power, a storage system must be included in the design. Current battery systems use either lithium-ion or lead-acid cells.

Homes with large solar energy systems that remain attached to the electrical grid may be allowed to sell unused electricity back to the utility company. That way if you generate more power than you use, you could actually profit from the power generation. You can also install a small home solar power system that can be used for backup power during daylight hours. Single panels are available to use as charging stations for smaller 12-volt devices.

Solar energy is the perfect clean and renewable energy source. Today’s homeowners can start experiencing the benefits of a solar energy system on a small basis and then add to the technology as desired.
